By Patrick Ochei
Oshimili South Local Government Chairman, the young, dynamic and highly rated performing Council Chairman, Hon. Ezenyili Kelvin Obi Ph.D., has showcased impressive developmental strides of his administration within the first year in his second term in office.
He reeled out these milestone and laudable accomplishments in infrastructure, human capital development and social welfare and amenities in his briefing to members of the fourth estate of the realm on Wednesday 6th August, 2025, at the Executive Chamber of the Council Secretariat.
Ezenyili began his address by telling the story of the strategic construction and commissioning of the Oko Event Centre within his first six months in office. In addition to that, the groundbreaking and completion of open stalls in the new modern foodstuff market in Cable Point Area has been done with, the construction and completion of the Oshimili South Local Government Plaza which is the burnt section of Ogbeogonogo market has been done with, a 150 KVA Generator has been provided for the Secretariat, a 500 KVA Transformer to residents of Okelue Street in Asaba has been provided and of course, 3 acres of land has been acquired for cemetery which would be built on Public Private Partnership.
As a proactively progressive Local Government Administrator, Ezenyili has hit over 60% completion of his construction of new Administrative Secretariat Office Complex that would house all the departments of the Council, including federal agencies operating at the Council.
Evaluating the strategic and economic importance of the Council’s old Arcade Ground, Ezenyili has further done groundbreaking to build a more befitting ultra modern Event Centre therein.
On other fronts of development, the amiable Council Chairman has exceeded expectations in the areas of primary healthcare services, environmental sanitation, youth empowerment both in financial grants and advanced digital skills acquisition and lots of other strategic entrepreneurship empowerments to women and vulnerable indigenes of the Local Government Area.
However, one of the areas the Council Chairman has continued to receive accolades in recent time is Security. Before now, the issue of security was a huge one because of the location of Asaba which is close to the Eastern region by the Niger Bridge, thereby attracting the influx of strangers, some of whom are criminals in disguise.
Facing the security challenges headlong, the Council Chairman created a Security Trust Fund, established a Security Taskforce, purchased Security Vehicles and Motorbikes, quickly commenced the installation of CCTV Cameras within the Council Secretariat and now poised to extend it to all parts of Asaba metropolis on the approval of the Governor, acquired the New Emergency Security Number – the Security Short Code 7745 and has commenced raiding of drug dealers’ den which is a major criminal hideout where criminals plan, strategize and launch their criminal onslaught on the city dwellers.
Sincerely, all within the stakeholding circle of security have applauded Hon. Ezenyili for his smart administrative acumen and prudence in fighting insecurity within Asaba and environs. However, the challenges are still there and the truth remains that the Council needs support and collaboration for Maritime Policing Infrastructure, Adequate Security presence to check inter-state and cross-border criminal movements, including youth vulnerability and recruitment by criminal networks, invasion of Oko community by Fulani herdsmen, proliferation of drug dens, prostitution by the girl child, combating street urchins and more.
Pleased and satisfied by the avalanche of achievements of Hon. Ezenyili in record time, the NUJ leadership led by its State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, who painstakingly went round to assess the projects as named by the Local Government Chairman, affirmed that the evidence on ground speaks volume of the presence of focused leadership and good governance at play in Oshimili South Local Government Area.
Oyowe commended Hon. Ezenyili for job well done and further appraised him as one of the high rising politicians who would advance the country to the next positive level of leadership.
In a nutshell, it is expected that when the result of the NUJ as the watchdog of the society comes out, Hon. Ezenyili’s name would be written in gold among that of those who are raising the bar of leadership at the grassroots governance level.
