Residents of Oko-Amakom Community in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the Federal Government and humanitarian organizations to dredge the River Niger to curb recurring flooding in the area.
The appeal came during a humanitarian visit by the Turkish Red Crescent in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, where relief materials were distributed to elderly residents, women, and other vulnerable victims of the 2025 flood disaster. About 170 households benefitted from the intervention.
Head of the Middle East and Africa Regional Sector of the Turkish Red Crescent, Selçuk Öztürk, described the gesture as an act of solidarity with the Nigerian Red Cross to support communities affected by flooding.
According to him, the organization decided to partner its Nigerian counterpart to provide both food and non-food items to ease the hardship faced by victims.
Director of Disaster Management at the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Dr. Benson Agbro, said the agency had been working in the community for years and seized the opportunity of the partnership to return with more support. Delta State Branch Manager, Adolphus Anuagasi, added that the visit was in response to the devastating 2025 floods.
Youth Leader of the community, Keme Daniel, urged the Federal Government to dredge the River Niger, noting that the shallow riverbank contributes to frequent flooding.
Some beneficiaries, including a pregnant woman, Franca Okoye, and a septuagenarian, Justina Omekam, expressed gratitude to the Red Cross for the assistance and prayed for continued support for vulnerable residents.
Items distributed to beneficiaries included 25-kilogram bags of rice, 10 kilograms of beans, five litres of cooking oil, and 25-litre water containers.
