NAWOJ Slams Ozoro Festival Abuse, Demands Justice
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), South-South Zone, has described the recent incidents at the Ozoro Festival as a grave threat to the safety and mental well-being of women, calling for urgent action to ensure justice for victims.
In a statement jointly signed by the Zonal Vice Chairperson, Comrade Stella Macaulay, and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia, the association strongly condemned the acts of violence against women and girls carried out under the guise of cultural observance.
NAWOJ said the development was disturbing, unacceptable, and highlights the heightened vulnerabilities faced by women in society.
The association warned that it would not remain silent in the face of injustice, misconduct, or any form of abuse, stressing its commitment to speaking out against violations of human rights.
While commending the state government and security agencies for their response so far, NAWOJ called for a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the incidents.
It urged relevant authorities to ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done to restore public confidence and deter future occurrences,” the statement noted.
NAWOJ also called on stakeholders, including media organisations, civil society groups, and government agencies, to uphold moral standards and protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights, the association pledged continued support for victims and sustained advocacy against all forms of misconduct.
