The Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has commended the family of the late Madam Patience Okonedo for donating a newly constructed six-unit toilet facility to Okutu Primary School, Otokutun. He described the gesture as a major contribution to improving teaching and learning conditions in Delta State.

Speaking on behalf of the state government during the official handover ceremony, Dr. Ashibogwu praised the Okonedo family for their strong commitment to community development and the wellbeing of school-aged children.

He noted that access to safe and sanitary restroom facilities is essential for creating healthy learning environments, explaining that the new facility will help curb open defecation, improve hygiene, and ensure that pupils—especially girls—feel comfortable and protected while in school.

“This donation is not just an infrastructure project; it is an investment in the health, dignity, and future of our children,” he stated. “The Okonedo family has set an example of selfless service and community partnership that aligns with the state’s vision for quality basic education.”

Represented by Mrs. Pamela Okolosi, the Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing standard learning facilities across the state. He also called on other well-meaning individuals, organizations, and families to emulate the Okonedo family’s example.

“The government cannot do it alone,” he said. “When communities and private individuals partner with us, the results are truly transformative.”

Speaking on behalf of the Okonedo family, Mrs. Judith Esievo explained that the project was donated in memory of Madam Patience Okonedo, who passed away a year ago and was remembered as a lifelong advocate for education, cleanliness, and community service.

In his remarks, the President-General of the community, Mr. Okeoghene Gory, expressed deep appreciation, noting that the facility addresses a long-standing infrastructural gap in the school. He described the gesture as timely, especially as the school’s population continues to grow, and pledged that the community would ensure the security and proper maintenance of the facility.

The project was facilitated by Mrs Isoken Omoh who also took the Commissioner’s entourage on a tour of the new toilet block, which features separate units for boys and girls, handwashing stations, and a proper waste disposal system designed to uphold public health standards.

Dr. Ashibogwu’s entourage included Dr. Michael Emeshili, Mrs. Chukwufunnaya Ovwigho, Mr Victor Ogwu, Mr. Felix Evwihor and Ms Helen Dibia. They were received by the Chief Inspector of Education, Ughelli South, Lady Grace Adakre, and the Headteacher of Okutu Primary School, Mrs. Joy Ebiereri.
