Delta State University Abraka, is set to introduce Open and Distance Learning System of education with Nursing Science Programme.

Vice Chancellor of DELSU , Prof. Andy Egwunyenga made the disclosure at  a press conference held ahead of the Institution’s 16th Convocation, yesterday.

Explaining that ODL was established to expand the frontiers of knowledge as well as provide access to educational opportunities for those who otherwise would have been denied education, Prof. Egwunyenga said that ODL will give opportunities to those willing to study and practice nursing within and outside the country.

Stating that the Nursing program of the ODL will accommodate no fewer than 10,000 students per session, he noted that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had done a pre -validation visit to assess the DELSU’s facilities and preparedness for the establishment of 0DL.

He said “ODL means that students are not required to attend classes or have face-to-face contact unless there are compelling reasons to justify it such as examinations, periodic facilitation and practicum.

“In this mode of learning, students are taught in their homes through interactive texts supplemented with other resources such as CD ROM, DVD and USB Sticks to deliver e-lectures as well as simulation and assessments.

“Therefore, ODL programmes are predicated on pedagogy, led by resources and not relying on face-to-face interaction. Students will be able to study anywhere in Nigeria or any part of the world.

“This bold step by Delta State University which commences in June this year with the Nursing Science programme will provide access to the same quality of education which Delta State University is known to hundreds of thousands of Nigerians who because of their circumstance cannot seek full-time studentship in the university.”
