Niger Junta Moves Against Nigerian Goods Amid Regional Tension
The military authorities of the Republic of Niger have imposed new restrictions on goods coming from Nigeria, citing escalated security concerns across the region.
The directive, issued by Colonel Mohamed Yacouba Siddo of the Customs Formalities Corporation, was made public after security analyst Brant Grant shared the notice on X.
Under the new rule, all commodities ,especially “miscellaneous goods” originating from Nigeria must now be offloaded and subjected to rigorous inspection at the country’s entry points before continuing their journey.
“For security requirements, all goods originating from Nigeria, particularly so-called miscellaneous goods, must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities,” the notice stated.
It added that only goods with valid documentation from recognized ports of discharge would be exempted from multiple offloading, and allowed to proceed directly to their final destinations.
Colonel Siddo ordered strict compliance and instructed customs officers to report any challenges encountered during implementation.
The move comes as regional tensions spike, following Sunday’s failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.
It also follows claims by the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) that eleven Nigerian military personnel were detained in Burkina Faso for allegedly violating its airspace, an allegation the Nigerian Air Force has firmly denied.
According to the NAF, the aircraft merely made an emergency landing due to a technical safety issue and did not breach any airspace regulations.
