Delta Education Ministry Organizes Generation Of Test Items

As part of activities for the conduct of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Delta State Government has organized generation of test items workshop in Asaba aimed at generating credible, reliable and valid items.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Chief (Mrs.) Rose Ezewu, JP said that the essence of the workshop was to generate items that would measure the teaching and learning outcomes and particularly adhere to outlined provisions in the school curriculum.

Ezewu said that the exercise would also create a unique forum for teachers with cognate experience in their subject areas to review the past evaluation instruments with a view to generating new ones to enrich the Ministry’s question bank so as to have enough test items from which the Ministry could adequately and reliably draw from the assessment of students’ eligibility for certificate in JS 3 class.

The Secondary Education Commissioner implored subject specialists to bring their expertise and knowledge to bear in generating credible test items , just as she commended the resource persons and the subject specialists for their immense contributions towards the success of previous years’ exercise.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Examinations and Standards, Mrs. Clementina Ojumah stated that the workshop was an annual exercise organized by the Ministry of Secondary Education for experienced teachers who were specialists in their various subject areas.

Ojumah, who reiterated that the objective was to generate valid , reliable and standardized test items drawn strictly from the approved scheme of work, noted that the items would enrich the Ministry’s question bank and enhance the credibility and integrity of future Basic Education Certificate Examination across the state.

While saying that each participant was expected to generate fifty multiple choice questions, five essay questions, two practical questions and two project-type questions, Mrs. Ojumah told the participants to develop the questions through using appropriate table of specification relevant to their subject areas and must be accompanied by a clear and well-structured marking scheme.

Ojumah explained that the approach was geard towards ensuring uniformity, ease of administration and fairness in the award of scores during the marking exercise across the state.

The resource persons including Dr. (Barr.) Emmanuel Oniyama from College of Education, Warri and Dr. Adams Ekwevugbe of the Delta State University, Abraka made presentations on new subject thematic area and guidelines on generation of test items respectively.
