Rivers APC Declares Support for Fubara, Says Impeachment Plot Unacceptable
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has firmly rejected the reported moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that such action would destabilize the state and damage the image of the ruling party.
In a statement signed by the Rivers State APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, today (January 8, 2026), the party said it was alarmed by what it described as “unfortunate developments” emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly concerning an impeachment process against the governor.
While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature and its role in ensuring checks and balances, the APC stressed that resorting to impeachment at this time was unacceptable and ill-advised.
“Our position as at today is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the party stated.
The Rivers APC cautioned against allowing internal crises that previously plagued the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to infiltrate and destabilise the APC-led government in the state.
Addressing claims that the impeachment threat is linked to budgetary issues, the party recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025. The budget, it noted, was duly approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.
According to the party, the approved budget is meant to run for one year until August 2026, adding that Governor Fubara is under no constitutional obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with its provisions. It further pointed out that the constitution permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.
The APC therefore urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilizing the government.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement declared.
The party called on the lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that proceeding further would drag the party’s image “into the mud” and undermine the state’s ongoing development.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the statement concluded.
