The Delta State Chapter of the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) has appealed to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to assist in the construction of a befitting state secretariat for the organization following the demolition of its former structure.

The appeal was made by the State President of NCWS, Comrade Mrs. Margaret Jokoh-Abugewa, during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held at the NCWS permanent site along the Asaba–Ugbolu Expressway, Asaba.

Mrs. Jokoh-Abugewa recalled that during the administration of former Governor Chief James Onanefe Ibori, a parcel of land was allocated to the organization in Asaba, where members worked tirelessly to erect a secretariat building up to roofing level.

She, however, lamented that the land was later taken over and the structure demolished, a development she described as a major setback for women across the state.

According to her, hope was restored when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved the reallocation of another parcel of land to the NCWS, providing the organization with an opportunity to rebuild.

She expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori, the Wife of the Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, and other stakeholders for their support in securing the new site.

“Our members across the 25 local government areas were deeply saddened by the demolition of our secretariat, but Governor Sheriff Oborevwori listened to our concerns and graciously reallocated another parcel of land to NCWS, where we are gathered today,” she said.

Mrs. Jokoh-Abugewa noted that the immediate challenge before the organization is the construction of a new secretariat that will serve as its administrative headquarters and meeting venue.

She therefore appealed to Governor Oborevwori to support the rebuilding project and also called on the Wife of the Governor, the 25 NCWS Local Government Area Coordinators, women across Delta State, corporate organizations, and public-spirited philanthropists to contribute towards the realization of the project.

According to her, the proposed secretariat would serve as a rallying point for women empowerment initiatives, advocacy programmes, and the advancement of women’s development across the state.

“NCWS members are passionately appealing to His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, to assist us in rebuilding our secretariat. We also call on our dear First Lady, our 25 LGA Coordinators, women across Delta State, philanthropists, and all well-meaning individuals to join hands with us in ensuring that a befitting NCWS secretariat is built and completed in the shortest possible time,” she appealed.

Dignitaries at the event included Hon. Barr. Bridget Anyafulu, member representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly; a representative of the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs. Rosemary Okpuno; and a representative of the Africa Indigent Care Foundation, Rev. Sis. Fidelia Njinkeonye.

The 2026 International Women’s Day celebration was themed, “Give to Gain.”
