Plateau Locks Schools Amid Kidnap Fears
The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all basic schools following heightened security concerns across the state.
In a statement released on Friday by the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), authorities announced a staggered shutdown schedule: Government Junior Model Secondary Schools will close on Saturday, November 22, 2025, while Primary and Day Schools will shut their gates from Monday, November 24.
According to the Board, the decision became necessary to avert potential threats and safeguard pupils and staff amid rising fears of attacks on learning institutions.
“This closure is a temporary but necessary step to forestall possible security risks,” the statement said. “The government is prioritising the well-being of our learners.”
PSUBEB called on Local Government Education Authorities, school heads, and community leaders to maintain vigilance and cooperate fully as the directive takes effect.
The move comes less than 24 hours after gunmen abducted several students from a Catholic school in Niger State, the second mass abduction within a week.
Earlier on Monday, armed men stormed a girls’ boarding school in neighbouring Kebbi State, kidnapping 25 students and killing the vice-principal.
