Military Confirms Coup Plot Against Tinubu, Officers to Face Court Martial
The military high command has confirmed that some of its officers were involved in a plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and will soon face trial.
This followed the submission of the report of a special panel that investigated the arrest and detention of several officers, ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier-General, who were alleged to have attempted to stage a coup.
In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said investigations into the matter had been concluded and the panel’s report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with military regulations.
He disclosed that the probe established that some of the officers had cases to answer for conduct inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
According to him, those indicted would be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels and tried in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other relevant service regulations.
“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in line with established military procedures, carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” Uba said.
“The findings identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is incompatible with the core values of the Armed Forces. Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be subjected to due process through military judicial channels.”
He explained that the decision to make the development public was to promote accountability while ensuring fairness and respect for due process.
Uba added that the Armed Forces remain committed to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority, stressing that the ongoing actions were purely disciplinary and aimed at preserving order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the military.
