Stepmother Allegedly Murders 9-Year-Old Stepdaughter in Enugu
The Enugu State Government and the Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged killing of a nine-year-old girl, Ogechi Amanda John, by her stepmother in the Emene area of Enugu State.
The suspect, Mrs. Ogechi John, said to be from Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested on Monday following the tragic incident which reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon at the family’s residence in Nchatancha, Emene.
Residents of the area alleged that the deceased child had suffered repeated abuse and harsh treatment from her stepmother before the fatal assault.
Neighbours said the incident happened around 3 p.m., sparking outrage within the community as news of the child’s death spread.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in Enugu State, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, condemned the incident, stressing that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and violence against minors.
According to her, the state government immediately intervened to ensure the arrest of the suspect and would pursue speedy justice for the deceased child.
“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide.
“So, we swung into action on learning about this tragedy to ensure that the suspect was arrested.
“But it doesn’t end there. We will be pressing for thorough and expedited investigation to ensure that justice is not just done, but done really fast.
“Nobody should take another’s life and certainly not the life of any child in Enugu State. We condemn it in totality,” she stated.
Police authorities are yet to release an official statement on the matter as investigations continue.
