Delta shuts Federal road over collapsed culvert

Delta state government has announced the closure of  a section of  Asaba-Illah-Ebu-Uromi Federal road following the sudden collapse of the Anwai river culvert.

Although, the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has directed the Ministry of Works in the state to commence palliative measure on its repair, he warned commuters to beware of the present days on the road that leads to the Abuja.

The Governor, represented by his Commissioner for Works, Olorogun James Aguoye, supported by his counterpart in Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, during a  briefing in Asaba today (12/11/19),urged motorists to maintain speed limit on the narrow road.

He said, “It will be very hazardous to allow vehicles to continue to ply the section of the road. We have written to the Federal Ministry of Works to alert them of the looming danger on the road. So, we implore Dangote trucks and other heavy duty vehicles to avoid that section of the road for now.”

He debunked the speculation that the Udu bridge, which was constructed in 1970s, was near collapse but confirmed the collapse of a bridge in Ughelli.

He explained that Engineers from his Ministry had carried out discreet investigations on the Udu bridge and discovered that it was not a collapse sign but mere vibration of the hand rails, which had expired.

He said the state would continue to accord priority attention to road rehabilitation, be it state or Federal, especially the Benin-Sapele-Warri Expressway, which continues to fail despite interventions, for the benefit of the people of the state.
