Delta NAWOJ Congratulates Oborevwori, two Female HoA- Elect
Delta State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has congratulated the State’s Governor- elect, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on his victory in the just concluded governorship election.
Also saluted were the two female Delta House of Assembly members-elect, Bridget Anyafulu Esq., Mrs Marilyn Okowa-Daramola as well as the only female House of Representatives member-elect, Hon. Eriatake Ibori-Suenu.
The congratulatory messages were contained in a communique issued at the end of the Association’s congress, jointly signed by the Delta NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo and Secretary, Comrade Tracy Ikolomi.
While felicitating with other winners of the State and National Assembly elections, NAWOJ called for more women participation in active politics so as to raise the bar on advocacy for gender equality.
Other resolutions at the Congress reads; “NAWOJ condemned in entirety the brutal mal-handling of a woman by men of the Nigeria Police Force in a recent video that went viral on social media and called on the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command to ensure the officers are brought to book.
“NAWOJ urged the Delta State Governor-elect to surpass the records of his predecessor and adopt the National Gender policy of 35 percent Affirmative Action in appointing members of his Cabinet.
“NAWOJ Delta congratulated and commended women journalists in Delta State for their peaceful conduct and coverage of the just concluded 2023 general elections.
“The Association congratulated Nawojians, particularly Comrade Stella Macaulay, who has embraced and used Information Technology and Innovation to achieve International recognition as well as others who got local awards. Delta NAWOJ, therefore, encouraged women to avail themselves of technological innovations/advancements that will earn them gainful employment.
“NAWOJ Delta commended the Delta State Government for the domestication of the VAPP law and provision of the SAC Centre in the Asaba Specialist Hospital. The Association however urged the Government to provide additional SAC centers in the senatorial districts of the state as well as create Safe homes for survivors of SGBV.
“Finally, NAWOJ Delta commended the State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for his development strides especially the transformation of the Asaba metropolis, and urged him to as a man of his word, ensure the fulfillment of his finishing strong mantra.”
