ECOWAS orders military action against Niger junta
The members of the Economic Community of West African States have placed their armies on red alert on possible attack on Niger Republic.
This was the resolution of ECOWAS members meeting in Abuja today.
The President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray made the declaration of war while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS extraordinary meeting in Abuja.
The regional body appealed to the African Union, partner countries and institutions to support the military option.
ECOWAS argued that all efforts to convince the military junta to restore constitutional order and release former President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members fell on deaf ears.
The resolution reads thus :’Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand by force with all its elements immediately.
Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.’
