DSIEC to Conduct Council Elections Soon

Chairman of Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) , Dr Jerry Agbaike has said that the 2024 Local Government Council elections into the vacant offices of the 25 Local Government chairman, Vice Chairmen and 500 Councilors in the State will be conducted soon.

Dr Agbaike made the statement at a meeting with registered political parties and other critical stakeholders held yesterday, at Asaba.

He explained that the gathering was aimed at briefing stakeholders on commission’s progress towards the upcoming council election.

Reacting to a question on when Local Government election will be conducted in the State, he said “ The Council election will be conducted soon.”

Assuring that DSIEC will ensure a “level playing field’’ for all registered political parties , political actors and stakeholders, he said the Commission aims to reduce voters apathy in the State.

Agbaike also noted that DSIEC will embark on an elaborate voter education campaign to sensitize the voter population on the need to exercise their civic responsibilities in choosing leaders that will enable them to enjoy dividends of democracy.

Warning that electoral malpractices shall not be tolerated, he said that culprits of electoral infractions shall be promptly reported to security agencies for prosecution and if found guilty, summarily dealt with in accordance with the law.

However, the chairman sought the support and understanding of security agencies , registered political parties, Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), the media, NGOs , CSOs and others to enable the Commission conduct a free, fair and credible Council elections in the State.

The DSIEC chairman also advised all stakeholders to shun compromise and resist any form of intimidation or suasion, urging them to abstain from actions that can breech the public trust.
