NUJ Seeks Free, Fair, Credible LG Elections in Delta

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has tasked the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) on conduct of free , fair and credible Local Government elections in the State.
The Chairman of the State Council of NUJ, Comrade Churchill Oyowe gave the charge when he led some of his Executives and members on a courtesy visit on the Chairman of DSIEC, Dr Jerry Agbaike, yesterday.
Comrade Oyovwe explained that a positive and constructive relationship between the media and DSIEC is important for the success of LG elections in the State.
Affirming the significance of LG elections to democratic processes, he noted that NUJ stands to provide accurate coverage to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible.
He said that the meeting is aimed to promote effective channel of communication between the council and DSIEC, ensure security of Journalists during the election as well as organize training for coverage of the election.
Responding, the chairman of the DSIEC, Dr. Agbaike described the visit as timely and welcomed as preparations for the 2024 Local Government elections in Delta State are in full gear.
Dr. Agbaike stated that the Commission is poised to conduct free, transparent and credible election as well as provide level field for all political parties and contestants.
Nothing that DSIEC believes in fairness, equity and Justice, the chairman of the commission said his team is made up of people who can deliver on commission’s mandate.
He assured that the commission in collaboration with security agencies will provide adequate security for the conduct of the election , including Journalists.
Acknowledging Journalists as important partners that can help the commission in delivering on its mandate which is simple and firm.
While thanking the NUJ for the visit, he promised to establish an effective communication channel with the NUJ while assuring of trainings for coverage LG elections in the State.
