Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the construction of divisional police headquarters in all 25 local government areas of the state as part of measures to strengthen security and prepare for the eventual establishment of state police.

The governor announced the decision on Wednesday while delivering his keynote address at the Delta State Security Summit 2026 held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

Speaking on the theme, “Security: A Collective Responsibility,” Oborevwori said the approval was part of his administration’s broader efforts to enhance the state’s security architecture and improve the protection of lives and property.

He disclosed that the State Executive Council approved the project in anticipation of future policing reforms, noting that security remains the foundation for sustainable development and economic growth.

According to the governor, his administration has continued to invest heavily in security operations through strategic partnerships with security agencies and communities.

He said the government recently restructured and strengthened Operation Delta Sweep, the state’s joint security outfit, while also establishing the Delta State Security Trust Fund to support security operations through public-private sector collaboration.

Oborevwori further revealed that the state was procuring additional operational vehicles and security equipment and intensifying the training and retraining of security personnel to boost operational effectiveness.

While calling on residents to support security agencies with timely information, the governor stressed that effective security requires collective action.

“If you don’t share information, security agencies are not magicians. They operate based on intelligence and credible information,” he said, urging citizens to report suspicious activities in their communities.

The governor also reiterated Delta State’s commitment to combating terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of criminality, emphasizing that peace and security remain critical to attracting investment and driving development.

Earlier, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, said the summit was convened to address emerging security challenges and develop practical solutions through stakeholder engagement.

In goodwill messages, security chiefs, including the Commander of 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Asaba, Brigadier General Folu Shonibare, commended Governor Oborevwori for his sustained support for security agencies and commitment to maintaining peace across the state.

Stakeholders at the summit reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration among government, communities and security agencies to sustain peace and security in Delta State.
