NDC Faults Delta Assembly Over Declaration of Lawmaker’s Seat Vacant, Decries Abuse of Legislative Power

The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the decision of the Delta State House of Assembly declaring the seat of the member representing Udu State Constituency, Hon. Barr. Egbetamah Ovie Collins, vacant following his defection to the party.

In a statement issued on Tuesday July 1, 2026, by the State Publicity Secretary, Chief McCollins Nwose, the party described the Assembly’s action as unconstitutional, politically motivated, and an abuse of legislative powers aimed at intimidating opposition voices in the state.

According to the NDC, the decision undermines the principles of democracy, fairness, and the rule of law, insisting that the declaration sets a dangerous precedent capable of eroding constitutional governance.

The party argued that it was “ironic and hypocritical” for political actors who previously defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) without losing their seats to now seek the removal of another elected representative for exercising what it described as the same constitutional right.

The NDC maintained that the mandate held by Hon. Egbetamah belongs to the people of Udu State Constituency and not to any political party, stressing that any attempt to override the will of the electorate through what it termed selective interpretation of the law was unacceptable.

The party called on civil society organisations, pro-democracy groups, and other stakeholders to reject what it described as an assault on constitutional democracy and to defend the democratic rights of the people.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the mandate of its elected representatives and supporters, the NDC said it would continue to pursue all lawful means to safeguard democratic principles in Delta State
