INEC Displays Candidates’ Credentials for 2027 Presidential Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday commenced the public display of the personal particulars and supporting documents submitted by candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 general elections.

The commission said the exercise is being conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as its revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 polls. The documents on display include the nomination papers filed by candidates seeking to contest the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

The publication of the candidates’ credentials took place at INEC’s State Headquarters in Abuja and simultaneously across the six Area Council offices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). According to the commission, the exercise is designed to enhance transparency and provide members of the public with the opportunity to examine the credentials and other documents submitted by candidates.

Speaking on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the FCT, the Administrative Secretary, Bimbo Oladunjoye, said the exercise is a statutory requirement under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026. She explained that the law mandates the commission to publicly display the personal particulars, affidavits and other relevant documents of candidates in the constituencies where they intend to contest elections.

Oladunjoye noted that the exercise covers both presidential candidates and National Assembly aspirants contesting elections in the FCT. She added that displaying the documents simultaneously across all Area Council offices is intended to ensure easy access for members of the public.

She described the publication of candidates’ particulars as a vital stage of the electoral process, saying it promotes openness, accountability and public confidence in the conduct of elections. She encouraged citizens, political parties, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to take advantage of the exercise by carefully scrutinising the information made available.

Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to credible elections, Oladunjoye said INEC remains on schedule with preparations for the 2027 general elections and will continue to implement every stage of the electoral process in line with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Commission’s regulations and guidelines.
