Fourth Edition of South-South U-13 Badminton Tournament Commences in Delta
The fourth edition of the South -South Under 13 Badminton Tournament has commenced in Asaba, with the State Chairman of the Badminton Association, Mr. Felix Awala Tangbe, expressing optimism that the competition will help discover and nurture young talents for the future.
The tournament, held at the Asaba Stadium, attracted young badminton players from Delta State, Edo State and the NNPC Badminton Team.
Speaking at the event, Tangbe said the under 13 tournament was aimed at strengthening grassroots development by catching young talents early while providing them with opportunities to develop their skills .
According to him, the initiative was driven by his passion for badminton as well as his desire to see young players develop into future national stars.
Tangbe , who is also the South-South representative on the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, disclosed that the tournament is currently self-sponsored, adding that he had personally committed more than N4 million to its organization of the fourth edition of the tournament.
He noted that one of the major achievements of the tournament was the emergence of a female player who started competing in the Under-13 category and has now progressed to the national team.
Expressing hope that more players discovered through the competition would eventually earn places in the national team, Tangbe stated that watching the children compete with the ambition of becoming professional badminton players was a major motivation for him to sustain the competition.
Declaring the tournament open, the Technical Director of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Ogbe Gordons, commended the organizers for their commitment to grassroots sports development.
