The Gospel Without Words Foundation has organized the first stage of science competition for students of Owa-Oyibu secondary school and Owalizomor secondary school both in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking to journalists shortly after conducting the preliminary stage of the competition, the Director of Science Education in the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor said that the essence of the science competition was to immortalize their late parents , Sir and lady Okwuokenye .
Igumbor noted that their parents were lovers of sciences and education in general, adding that since the burial ceremony of their mother was coming up on November 7, 2025, she and her siblings decided to organize the competition.
On why the competition was strictly restricted to the secondary schools in the two communities, Igumbor stated that their mother hailed from Owalizomor while their father hailed from Owa-Oyibu.
While saying that the science competition would be sustained to become a scholarship scheme , Igumbor explained that the competition was also aimed at encouraging reading culture among students in the two communities.
The Director, however, decried poor reading culture among students nowadays and reminded them that education was the best path to success in life , just as she admonised them to take their studies serious.
She clarified that award of excellent performance would be given to the best three candidates at the end of the competition, assuring that they would select some students based on their performance and register them for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
