Defence HQ Grieves as Former Military Spokesman Dies in Bandits’ Custody

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former spokesman of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, has died while in the captivity of bandits, several weeks after he was abducted.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed his death in a statement on Saturday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the retired senior military officer and extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and Nigerians.

Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, described the late officer as a distinguished soldier who served the nation with dedication in various capacities, including as spokesman for the Armed Forces and Director of Defence Information.

According to the statement, Major General Abubakar made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the Armed Forces, and other national security initiatives during his years of service.

The military explained that it had refrained from making public comments about his abduction while efforts to secure his release were ongoing. It noted that all available operational resources were deployed in the hope of rescuing him safely.

DHQ said the tragic death of the retired general has further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to intensify ongoing operations against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening the country’s peace and security.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will remain resolute in the discharge of its constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and protect all citizens,” the statement said.

The military also assured Nigerians that security operations have been intensified in response to recent cases of abductions across the country, including that of the late Major General Abubakar, with a commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice and dismantling terrorist networks.

The Defence Headquarters vowed not to relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for acts of terrorism and banditry are held accountable.
