IWD 2026: NCWS Delta Advocates Stronger Rights, Justice for Women and Girls

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Delta State Chapter, yesterday marked the 2026 International Women’s Day with a renewed call for gender equality, stronger protection of women’s rights, and collective action toward the empowerment of women and girls.

The event, held at the NCWS Permanent Site along the Asaba–Ugbolu Expressway, Asaba, was organized under the theme: “Rights, Justice, and Action for Women and Girls.” It brought together women leaders, professionals, stakeholders, and advocates to deliberate on issues affecting women and girls, while emphasizing equal opportunities, access to justice, and inclusive development.

Delivering her remarks, Hon. Barr. Bridget Anyafulu, Member representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, urged stakeholders to move beyond ceremonial celebrations and take deliberate action to address gender inequality and entrenched power imbalances.

She stated: “International Women’s Day should not just be a celebration, but a call to action. We must deliberately dismantle barriers that limit women, ensure justice is accessible, and create an inclusive society where women and girls can thrive.”

She further highlighted the importance of empowering women at the grassroots, stressing the need to support rural women through targeted empowerment programmes, improved access to opportunities, and inclusive policies that will enable them contribute meaningfully to development and the growth of Delta State. She also commended the Governor of Delta State for his efforts in facilitating the acquisition of a permanent site for NCWS, describing it as a landmark achievement for women in the state.

Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman of the occasion and Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Indigent Care Foundation who was represented by Rev. Sis Fidelia Njinkeoye, noted that sustained societal progress depends on women being fully aware of their rights and responsibilities, stressing that such awareness is key to empowerment, equality, and active participation in decision-making.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Hon. Barr. Chief Mrs. Patience Ajudua, represented by the Assistant Director, Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs. Okpuno Rosemary, described International Women’s Day as a moment for reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to advancing the welfare of women and girls. She added that women remain central to sustainable development, continually breaking barriers across leadership and governance in Delta State.

On her part, the State President of the National Council of Women Societies, Comr. Mrs Margaret Abugewa, called for stronger women empowerment initiatives, equal opportunities, and increased participation of women in leadership and decision-making processes. She emphasized that empowering women remains vital to sustainable national development, noting their critical roles in education, family stability, and economic advancement across society.
