Flamingos Make History, Beat Japan 2-1 to Win Maiden U-17 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history by becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, following an impressive 2-1 victory over Japan in Saturday’s final in Morocco.
Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku secured Nigeria’s maiden title, as the Nigerian youngsters produced a resilient performance to overcome their Japanese opponents and etch their names in the history of African football.
The Flamingos took the lead in the 39th minute through Bashiru, who capitalised on a goalkeeping error by Japan’s Kou Kadowaki. The Nigerian forward spotted the goalkeeper off her line and lobbed the ball towards goal, with Kadowaki failing to hold on as it slipped through her gloves into the net.
Nigeria had threatened earlier, with Bashiru and Umejiaku coming close to breaking the deadlock. Umejiaku also saw her header from a set-piece crash against the crossbar after another handling error by the Japanese goalkeeper.
The Nigerian side extended their advantage just two minutes into the second half, with Umejiaku producing a fine finish in the 47th minute.
Esther Stephen provided the assist with an incisive pass that split Japan’s defence, allowing Umejiaku to race through on goal. The forward showed composure to control the ball with her left foot before delicately chipping it over the advancing Kadowaki to make it 2-0.
Japan launched a spirited fightback in the closing stages, piling pressure on the Nigerian defence in search of a way back into the contest.
However, the Flamingos stood firm under sustained pressure, displaying determination and defensive discipline to protect their advantage and seal a historic triumph.
The victory capped a remarkable campaign for the Nigerian team, who recovered from an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland to record five consecutive victories and emerge champions.
The triumph marks a significant milestone for African women’s football, with Nigeria becoming the continent’s first-ever winner of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
